BSBC InformationGeneral:Bishops Stortford Badminton club prides itself on being a friendly club catering for those who want to play their badminton in a competitive but relaxed atmosphere. Our home venue is Birchwood Sports Centre which is located in the Birchwood High School in Bishops Stortford. Our club nights take place on Monday evenings between 8.00p.m. and 10.00p.m. when we have four purpose built courts for the use of club members and invited guests. During the league season we also play on Wednesday evenings at Birchwood Sports Centre where we fulfil our home league matches. We field a large number of mixed, mens and ladies teams across the Hertfordshire County, Hertford Area and Braintree Area leagues making the most of our geographical location and proximity to the M11, A120 and A10 road link. Feather shuttles are our preferred option for club and match use giving a good combination of quality and durability suitable across a wide range of playing standards. |
New Members:We are always pleased to welcome new members to join the main club. Those players who are competitive and wish to improve to league and county standard are invited to contact us if they would like to be our guest at a club night. This gives an opportunity to meet some of our members and to see if you are comfortable with the standard of play. This first visit is £5 for a 2 hour badminton session with the club and you can be invited back up to twice more paying a further guest fee of £5 per night. At any time over these three visits you can of course be offered membership although our rules say that a decision on membership always has to be made by the club or the individual after the third attendance. The current subscription fee is £60 per half season, September to December & January to April inclusive. As a new member your subscription would be pro-rated and any guest fees already paid taken into account. See our rules section for more details of membership options and the fee structure. |
Junior Badminton Club:For further information please see our Junior Club section or contact Phil Barton, the Junior Club Coach. Phil Barton(Club Captain & Junior Club Coach) 01279 654464 or email Phil |
Summer Club:Between May and August we run a summer club which is open to non members of improver standard. This gives us the chance to help less experienced players, and especially juniors, with a view to improving their game sufficiently to make them candidates for membership of the main club. The summer club takes place on Monday evenings between 8.00pm and 10.00pm and the cost is £5 per session. Ring one of our contacts if you want to know more. Enjoy Badminton. No matter what your reason for taking up badminton we at Bishops Stortford Badminton Club believe playing the game should be a fun experience and enjoyment is what it’s all about. We hope the other sections of this site will help reflect this philosophy and, whether a new player or an old hand, we’d like to thank you for taking the time to visit us !! |

The price is only £5 to play and you will play badminton against some of our team members. If so, you will be invited to join our club. |
Club HistoryThe oldest recordof the Club is the minutes of a "General" meeting on 14th September 1927. This makes the Club at least 75 years old! Not surprisingly, we are unable to trace any current members with memories of those days, when the Club membership was 25 shillings (that's £1.25p). Other gems from those minutes were the agreement to continue to pay 6d (21/2p) for refreshments, and a proposal to invite a "Colonel Duff" to lecture at an early date during the season. No record of this event has been traced to date. Earliest press cuttingis The Cambridge Daily News of Monday, March 3, 1930, which recorded a double victory for G. N. Robarts of Bishop's Stortford Badminton Club in "Granta's second annual tournament", partnering Miss Cockerell in the mixed doubles and A. H. Adnitt in the men's doubles. The General Meeting minutes of 1938are followed by those of 20th September 1946. (the gap presumably due to the Second World War). These minutes record the amalgamation of the Bishop's Stortford BadmintonClub and the Watemore Badminton Club, retaining the BSBC name. Hall availability and shortage of shuttles are cited as reasons. Earliest team photois of the first mixed team in 1968 while in the late 1970's and early 1980's the Club ran up to 16 teams in a season in the Herts. County leagues, the Hertford Area Leagues, the Harlow Leagues and the Bishop's Stortford District Leagues. The Club had around 50 members, reflecting the popularity of Badminton as a participant sport at that time. |
Since 1970the Club has had many "homes", starting at that time at the Burton End (now called the Mountfitchet School) in Stansted, then moving to The Margaret Dane School, The Water Lane Institute, Helena Romanes School Dunmow and Bishopsport, before moving to its current home at Birchwood in 2007. This move to the newly built Birchwood Sports Centre enabled the club to undertake a radical expansion and reorganisation. Teams began to be fielded in the Herts County League and Braintree District League as well as the Hertford Area League improving the standard of play whilst increasing the range of opposition teams across two counties. The junior section, first started in 2002, became formally established as an integral part of the overall club structure. In 2009the club fielded a Ladies team in the South Cambridgeshire League which therefore meant that teams were playing competitively in three County League structures covering four Counties. Other bits of history:The Clubs oldest trophy is the E.M. Barrett Cup. Dating back to the late 1940's, it is named after Elsie Barrett, a long-serving club member of the time, and is presented to the winners of the clubs internal mixed doubles tournament. One of the earliest winners of the trophy was Joe Gunn, who became another long-serving Club member and after whom the men's doubles trophy is named. Joe sadly passed away in 2001. The ladies doubles trophy, the Suzanne Sharpe Shield, is named after yet another long-serving club member of the 1960's and 1970's. In1977 the Club celebrated its (at least) 50th anniversary by holding a tournament open to local clubs, which it ran for many years. Before the advent of Sports halls badminton was played in Church, village and school halls. Low ceilings caused repeated "lets" when the shuttle struck low beams. Matches played at Water Lane Institute regularly finished well after midnight, however one away match played by the Clubs ladies team in the Herts. County league finished at 2.45am. The Clubs men's doubles tournament was once won by a lady. |

JuniorsBishop's Stortford Junior Badminton Club is the junior section of the main adult club. Affiliated to Badminton England, and run by qualified coaches, there are about 35 members with ages between 12 and 18 and with a mix of boys and girls as well as abilities. Recruitment into the club is based on when there is a gap for a particular age, gender and ability as this helps ensure we maintain the right balance in the club and both experienced players and beginners can develop at the right speed. The emphasis is on enjoying the game, having fun, and developing a love of badminton that will continue into adult life whether playing competitvely or socially. If you would like further details about the junior club please contact our Junior Coach Phil Barton on:01279 654464or email Phil

AGM 2011BISHOPS STORTFORD BADMINTON CLUB ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING HELD WEDNESDAY 18TH MAY 2011.At Bishops Stortford Tennis Club, Cricket, Lane, Bishops, Stortford, Hertfordshire.Present:-Ceri Why Heidi Lawrence Duncan Christmas Diane Brown Simon Playfair Carl Ng Dave Ruff Terry Catton Tim Wood Brett Brocklehurst Carol Brocklehurst Joyce Barton Phil Barton Barbara Jacobs. Apologies:- Melanie Goodison Alan Gibbens Alison Cosadinos Mark Whitworth Ian Lloyd Susan Roberts Sean Ogley Geoff Stringer. 1.Minutes of the 2010 AGM.Accepted as an accurate record and signed. 2.Matters Arising.Simon was thanked for the work he did on trying to set up the internal club tournament. Unfortunately this did not come to fruition due to all members involved not attending club on a regular basis to play the matches.3.Club Night & Match Practice.Discussion was in regard to the practice courts sometimes being used for the odd few hours, as agreed at last years AGM. This seemed to work well, but the question asked by our club captain Phil was “did we want a formal method of payment for people playing tournament matches on the practice court, as this year this had not happened & we have to pay extra if a match starts at 7.30pm, as courts are booked from 8pm. It was agreed by all that a charge of £5 for a player in a singles tournament & £5 per pair (£2.50 each person) for a doubles match. If the practice court is needed next season for any tournament games, the player or players must ask the Captain of the team whose practice night it is if it is alright. Then send an email to both Joyce & Simon to confirm payment. 4. Braintree Tournament. This tournament was enjoyed by all who entered it, and once again Bishops Stortford came home with a considerable amount of silverware. Tim suggested that if a large number of us were going to finals night again like this year, it might be a nice idea to hire a little minibus. Then we can all enjoy their nice bar, and have an enjoyable night without having to drive. 5. Sports hall.Phil reported that there were no plans by the school to increase the price of the sports hall. There have however been a lot of problems with the invoicing for the sports hall by Birchwood’s accounts lady which has caused Ian a headache this season. Therefore it has been agreed by Ian & Phil that Phil will deal with all Birchwood’s invoices for payments, as Phil knows how many weeks, hours etc we use the courts for, and will make sure all is in order before Ian issues a cheque. 6. Fixtures Secretary’s Report. We had another good season fielding 9 teams in three different leagues, Braintree, Herts County and South Cambridgeshire. In the Braintree league the Men’s 6A won with the 6B team following in 3rd position. The mixed 4’s finished 3rd in a strongly contested league. Two casualties this season were the Ladies 4 and the Men’s 4, both finishing bottom of their respective leagues and getting relegated! The mixed 6 and the combination 6 teams were entered into the knock-out competitions along with the mixed 4. The handicapping system makes the outcome of these events unpredictable so we were pleased when both the 6 teams won their respective sections. The Braintree league also take account of score cards, as I stamp them all, it is particularly annoying to find we feature towards the bottom of the table! One card took 79 days to get to Dick…..please post the card as you leave the sports hall, there is a letter box 100 yards on the right of the school entrance. In the Braintree individual tournaments we had representation in most finals and have amassed enough silver wear to require a trophy cabinet!. Heidi won the ladies singles and Mark Whitworth the men’s. Diane and Alison were runners up in the ladies and Tim and Mark won the men’s doubles. Terry and Sean triumphed in the men’s veterans and Phil and Terry took the super vet cup. Terry and Carol were runners up in the super vets mixed while Joyce and Tim won the open mixed. South Cambridgeshire results were disappointing; we lost all our games and had only 16 rubbers for and 74 against. The standard was very high and it was a shame we didn’t manage to field a strong team on several occasions, those that did play enjoyed the games and felt they had learnt from the experience. Herts county league saw us finish 3rd in the men’s and the mixed A while the B team finished bottom of the table but did manage to win two games at the end of the season. The mixed A team conceded their final game to Comet which gave Comet second position, as this was a decider match for second and third place it was a game that should have been played. Next year a lot more team commitment will be needed from those that want to play in the top teams. We should not be conceding matches, if other teams do it to us, it will cost us a fortune in courts and also it isn’t very sportsmanlike! Captains need to ensure they return one score card for every match to me and if requested post one. Those needing to be posted will be stamped. When considering which teams to enter we need to be aware that the court time can accommodate 9 or 5 teams, if we want a number other than this we may need to look for other venues for these matches or look at putting match practise on a Wednesday and increasing the fees or charging a match fee for the practise night. While we certainly had some high points this season we have a lot of work to do in other areas to ensure we remain a seriously competitive club 7. Team & Selection Procedure. There was quite a heated debate in regard to the last County A mixed which was cancelled by the team captain Mark Whitworth, who was not present to defend his decision because two of the ladies in the team could not play. Joyce felt some less able ladies should have been asked, the men in the team felt this would have been a bit pointless because they would then have lost anyway. Tim pointed out that Joyce as Capt. of the ladies 6 had also done the same thing cancelling a game due to a lack of available team ladies, Joyce argued this was different as there were no available ladies at all! The outcome was that it was felt that as a club we must make maximum effort to field a team whatever the situation. It was also clarified that only people who are affiliated members of our club can play in our matches. Another issue raised was did we field to many teams last year. The general feel was yes we did. Poor Rob (Capt) had a nightmare trying to get a men’s 4 team out 95% of the season, and deserves a medal for his efforts. Dave Ruff said he dropped out of the men’s 4 because it was weak and he wasn’t going to drive miles to play knowing they would lose. Brett said this was a bad attitude to have because we try to accommodate all members who would like to play in matches when we do the team selection. He suggested that we drop the mens4 team this season; this was felt to probably be a good idea. We do have a remit to adjust teams as the committee see’s fit. On the ladies teams it was decided to drop out of the South Cambridgeshire league, keep the Braintree ladies 4 & two county mixed teams. Also we will be playing in the KO’s & the Braintree Tournament. The committee must manage the court time to the best of their ability. 8.Treasures Report.Ian was out of the country, so Simon who had audited the accounts did the report which unhappily was not good news. For the first time in years the club was down £900 on last year. We were down on subs and shuttles had cost us £700 more than last year. It was noted that Ewan’s 2nd half subs were still outstanding also 4 match fees for his team had not been paid in. This must not happen match fees should be handed to the treasurer asap after a match. And subs must be paid on time, no pay no play. It was agreed to keep subs again at £120, Match fee’s £5 & visitor’s fee’s £5 and see how we go. SUBS MUST BE PAID BY THE END OF JULY for affiliation purposes A copy of the accounts will be on file with the minutes as we don’t want them on public display. Any member wishing to see a copy please ask Carol. 9. Shuttles.Mark was unable to attend the AGM but sent a shuttle report as follows;- 1. No quality complaints 2. We have used far to many this year (even with my stingy distribution) 3.Needs to be a change of culture regarding shuttles i.e. not knocking up with new shuttles, only replacing a shuttle when needed etc. We have some cheaper Ashaway options available. I believe target price should be £10 - £12 per doz. Yonex are £12 - £14 per doz. Carol was asked to contact Mark in regard to him getting a price from BAof E for shuttles as they do offers on bulk orders & checking Ashaway prices. As Mark is moving further away he will not be in charge of distribution of shuttle anymore, that job is being taken over by Carl who offered to do it. He will also monitor club usage. Mark will still do the ordering. 10. Club Captains Report.Junior club is still thriving and still has a waiting list. Phil thanked Duncan and Barbara for all their help, and also Sean. He went on to say that we are a successful competitive club but we need to attract top players. We all need to sell the club and to keep our eyes open in sports halls for good players who might be looking to join a club. Brett and Tim felt we need to feed more juniors into the senior club, we have not had many juniors up and from such a large junior club they would have expected more. 11. Summer Club. Thanks went to Diane for running last year’s summer club. Due to Diane recovering from an injury Ceri and Melanie have offered to start this years Summer Club off until Diane returns, for which they received our thanks. Tim was asked to contact Paul Butcher who does the Braintree Web site, to ask him to let it be known we welcome players to our Summer Club. It was suggested that maybe a tournament could be arranged for next season’s summer club. This will be discussed at the next committee meeting. 12. Election of Officers. As Carol had know one express an interest in wanting to take a position on the committee the present committee were willing to stand for another year. Your Committee is:-
13. Any Other Business.Tim is redesigning our web site; this will allow club members to log on to change details etc and Joyce to update match information. Tim is also scanning all the silver wear we have just won so that we have a trophy cabinet on there for all to admire. Also we have a been given a whole lot of interesting paperwork appertaining to the club, score cards meetings etc dating back to 1927, which Tim is going to go though and scan all the interesting items to put on the web site. (Might take him forever it’s a huge amount) Club kit was broached to clarify that everyone is happy with our club kit colours being blue & white. Everyone was happy. Brett brought up the subject of Marks sponsorship, as according to Mark junior shirts had been purchased that were outside the sponsorship money allowance already spent for the year. Joyce said she had spoken to Mark in regard to the three shirts purchased and he had Ok’d it. Brett suggested that she should speak with Mark to clear up any misunderstanding. Phil was asked to check medical box contents at Birchwood. JOBS TO DO.Carol: - Contact Mark re shuttles Phil: - check medical box Tim: - Contact Paul Butcher re players welcome to SC Scan old club paperwork & Cups Mark: - Price shuttles Meeting closed at 10.23pm (22.23pm) |
